The orangutans
here are all rescue animals (orphaned or injured) and have been reintroduced
into the safety of the Sepilok Forest Reserve. They're wild apes and free to
roam, but generally make an appearance at the 09:00 and 15:00 feeding times.
The feedings are intended to supplement their natural diets, but it's also an
opportunity for tourists to get a good, long look at the orangutans as they
descend from the treetops to collect fruit and milk from the caretakers. The
feeding times are also when the tour buses show up in full force and Sepilok
can feel more like a zoo than a wildlife reserve.
Look for a sun bear conservation centre to be added in 2013. The centre has a
gift shop, cafe and a mini-theatre showing a documentary about Sepilok. A taxi
here costs 40 ringgit each way or take bus #14 (5 ringgit per person).
Admission is 30/15 ringgit adults/children, or 10 ringgit for Malaysian
citizens. There is an additional camera fee of 10 ringgit.
